The first line of syllabary consists of the five vowels a, i, u, e, o. The remainder are for combinations of the various consonants with these vowels.

ア / a Reading
Similar to "father".
Writing
1. A horizontal stroke, and then a short diagonal to left down.
2. A vertical stroke, curving to left at the end.
イ / i Reading
Similar to "meet".
Writing
1. A long diagonal stroke that goes from upper right to lower left.
2. A long vertical stroke that starts at the middle of the first stroke.
ウ / u Reading
Similar to "food".
Writing
1. A short vertical stroke.
2. Another short vertical stroke.
3. A right angle that turns downward in an arc.
エ / e Reading
Similar to "end".
Writing
1. A horizontal stroke.
2. A short vertical stroke in the middle.
3. Another horizontal stroke which is longer than the first stroke.
オ / o Reading
Similar to "oil".
Writing
1. A horizontal stroke.
2. A long vertical stroke that crosses the first stroke.
3. A diagonal stroke from upper right to lower left.
